Christina Bothwell
Artist Statement
In my work I am drawn to the processes of birth, death, and
renewal. The juxtaposition of diverse elements is of special
interest to me.
I am fascinated with what lie below
the surface, the things in life I cannot readily see or define.
I am constantly trying to get an understanding of the mysteries
of life-such as the lives of saints and mystics, the workings
of the unconscious, and the ways in which animals communicate.
I try and capture the qualities of the "unseen" in
my work that express the sense of wonder I feel in my daily
existence.
My figures (babies, dolls, and animals) encompass the element
of timelessness. Rather than representing death, I see them
as ghosts or spirits, transcending the cycles of living and
dying altogether.
The depiction of images, legends, and organs engraved or encased
in/on the surfaces of my pieces suggest inner lives and thoughts,
and act as a metaphor for delving below the surface.
